What is the best way of taking notes when reading a long textbook?

I’m reading a five textbooks for an exam. It’s a self-study program. Do you read the section first and then take notes? Is it okay to take notes on a Word document or is it best to use notebooks and paper? I have to read a lot of books and take a lot of notes. Right now I’m using a Word document but I don’t know if it’ll be helpful.
