What are the best ways to concentrate while reading?

Hi.
I have a found a new love (possibly out of nothing better to do) for reading endless wikipedia articles. However by the end of the article I often question myself and realise how i’ve taken little/nothing in. I get the idea of the article and vaguely remember the main aspects but find it hard to remember certain facts and figures.

Are there any particular methods people use when reading through documents?
Does remembering what you read just come out of practice?
Is it worth trying to write what i’ve just read down on paper?
